News from home

Well, I’m home. The surgery went well, and the pain is manageable without any narcotics.

Unfortunately, I have broken out in terrible hives, which are more irritating than the pain. This happened after my biopsy, too, so they tried a different surgical prep, but it didn’t work. So my skin is bright red and itchy. I give it negative three stars on a scale of one to ten.

Throw in some stomach upset from the other drugs, and I’m definitely a mess.

So while I am being a downer, I’ll toss in that my sentinel node biopsy didn’t go well. During my surgery, they use dye tracer to find the lymph nodes that are closest to the breast, as this is where cancer usually spreads first. They biopsy them during surgery, and mine came back with cancer. So those were removed as well, and it is now likely that I’ll be facing some chemotherapy.

I won’t have anything much to share about that until the pathology report comes back, on Wednesday or Thursday. It’s disappointing, since a previous biopsy had been clear and most of my cancer is still in the ducts (reducing risk of this outcome), but we’ll deal with whatever we have to.

Enough negative news. On a positive note, my house has lots of flowers and new unicorn toys. Huge thanks.

The kids will come home tonight, and even though I tire quickly, I am looking forward to seeing them.

Tomorrow I will stop at the doctor’s to get some bandages dealt with, after which I can shower – no waiting for the drains to be removed. That will be a good thing, and hopefully will help with the hives.

Thanks again for all your kind wishes and support, it does help.

  1. Oh Kate – You aren’t being a downer! In comparison to how you could be, hating the world, you use slight sarcasm and comedic relief to make the situation not so daunting!

Now the chemo – as you said, those results won’t be in until later this week. Let’s wait to hear what they have to say before “dang it” moments! Remember: you are a unicorn and they are magical and anything can happen between now and then – miracles happen every day!

Get some much needed rest and sending prayers, good thoughts and love!

  2. The Unicorn Doctor is there to help you mend (he better do his job!!!) You have tons of prayers and well wishes on this end, and let us know if there is anything you need (you’re right down the street, and we deliver) Get some rest, and know that we appreciate your updates and miss you terribly (hearing your voice, which does carry, makes us happy)

    1. The unicorn basket was amazing! I waited until my daughter was back and let her help go through it all. It was a great transition for her, since it was a little unsettling to see me laid up. Thanks for everything!

  3. Hi Kate, I hope it is going a little better today. Chemo – not so nice. I will be thinking of you and your family. Get all the rest you can. Emma
